Re-buy tournaments
During a standard tournament, when you who lose all of your chips you're eliminated from the tournament (this is known as a “freezeout”). But during a re-buy tournament that's not necessarily the case. Re-buys give you the chance to buy a new chip stack within a certain predefined time frame (the “re-buy period”) when you bust out or fall below a certain chip count.
Unless otherwise stated, you can re-buy at any time during the first 30 to 60 minutes of a re-buy tournament (the exact amount of time will be posted on the tournament page) if your chip stack falls below half of the initial stack.
What's more, all of our re-buy tournaments include an “add-on” option that allows you to top up with additional chips at the end of the re-buy period, regardless of how many chips you have. It's a great way of giving your chip stack a welcome boost!
Re-buy tournaments are popular as they can help you avoid the often fickle input of Lady Luck - if you get outdrawn and busted, you can re-buy and continue playing.
What's more, all the re-buys go to the prize pool, meaning that these forms of tournaments can often yield bumper pay days.
All re-buy tournaments are clearly marked in the tournament schedule and listings in the lobby.
Speed and turbo tournaments
Speed and turbo tournaments are fun and fast ways to enjoy your poker.
Sometimes you just don't have time to settle in for several hours to play a tourney and that's where speed and turbo tournaments come into their own.
Featuring quickly increasing blinds and a starting stack of 1,500 chips, these tournaments require a much more aggressive strategy and feature plenty of action right from the start.
Short-handed tournaments
Short-handed tournaments combine the skill and speed of a short-handed single-table tournament with the big prizes and excitement of a major multi-table event.
Inspired by the inclusion of a short-handed no-limit hold 'em event at the World Series, PKR is one of the only online poker rooms that allows you to experience this fast, fun and rewarding tournament format.
Unlike a standard multi-table tournament, where all players are placed randomly in tables of ten, PKR's short-handed MTTs see the field distributed randomly at tables of six. Apart from that, short-handed tournaments function as standard multi-table events.
Deep stack tournaments
PKR's deep stack tournaments give you more poker for your money.
The opposite of a speed or turbo tournament, our deep stack events allow you to dig and really play some poker. With double the usual number of starting chips and a 30-minute clock, these tournaments favor the more calculating, conservative and experienced player.
Deep stack tournaments are always freezeout multi-table tournaments. |

Sometimes featuring thousands of players, multi-table tournaments (MTTs) allow you to pit your wits against other players and compete for some really big prizes.
MTTs are scheduled events, meaning that they start at a specified date and time with players registering in advance. You can register at any time for an MTT from the moment it's posted in the lobby to a minute before the start.
Once you've bought-in, you'll start the MTT with the same number of chips as every other player and you'll be randomly assigned a seat. As the name suggests, the large number of entrants are seated at more than one table (either in tables of six or ten players).
As the tournament progresses and players get knocked out, tables are closed and players are re-seated to ensure that conditions remain fair for all players. Eventually the tournament will get to the point where there are only enough players to sit on one table. These players will then battle it out until one player has all the chips in play and is the winner.
The exact nature of the prize pool and how it pays out depends on a lot of factors. Look here for a full breakdown.
At PKR you'll find a huge range of MTTs running every day and with buy-ins starting at just $1 you're sure to find a game that'll get you hooked. |
 |
 |
Unlike a multi-table tournament, a sit and go has no scheduled start time. Instead sit and go's start when the table fills up with players. Sit and go's usually fill up pretty fast so, even if a tournament is empty, it will normally be full within minutes. If you find yourself in a sit and go that isn't filling up, don't worry. You can unregister up until the point the tournament is full and look for more action elsewhere.
As with any tournament, all sit and go buy-ins go towards the prize pool which is then distributed amongst the top finishers. The exact breakdown again depends upon the number of players and the buy-in.
The most common form of sit and go tournament is a single-table tournament. This is where either six or ten players are involved at one just table, with the winner being the last man standing.
That said, sit and go's can technically be for any number of players, although lower numbers (between six and 64) are far more common. |

A satellite tournament is a tournament where the prize, instead of being cash, is an entry into a larger tournament with a higher buy-in. Satellites are a great way of getting into big money tournaments.
The aptly named Chris Moneymaker is possibly poker's most famous satellite qualifier - he won his way into the WSOP via a satellite tourney in 2003 and ended up winning the event, and $2.5 million along the way.
There are two types of satellite tournament - single-table and multi-table. Both work in a similar way, except that a single-table satellite is contested between either six or ten players with the winner taking the seat in the bigger event. The number of qualifiers for the bigger event in a multi-table satellite is determined by the number of players and the size of the prize pool. It's not uncommon for three or four winners to qualify (with any remaining cash going to the next placed finisher).
But there's no doubting the major draw of online satellite tourneys - the chance to turn a small stake into a major tournament seat. It costs thousands to buy-in to tournaments like the World Series of Poker, World Poker Tour or European Poker Tour. In contrast, Chris Moneymaker won his seat in the WSOP in a $40 online qualifier. PKR have loads of these qualifiers that you can enter almost every day and that you can jump right into. |

Heads-up tournaments are perhaps the greatest single test of poker skill.
As the name suggests, these tournaments involve two players going head to head until one of them is out of chips. Winners of each round move up until only the final two are left to play it out for the big prize.
If 64 players register for a heads-up tournament, the first round will consist of 32 head-to-head match-ups which will then deliver 32 winners who will contest the next round. The field continues to thin until a champion is crowned!
